RIVER EDGE, NJ — The Bergen County Office of Mosquito & Vector Control will conduct a targeted mosquito-control treatment after routine surveillance detected West Nile virus in mosquito samples collected near Davis Drive, Monroe Court, and Van Saun Park in River Edge.
The treatment is scheduled for Thursday, July 30, between 10 p.m. and 11:59 p.m., with a rain date of Friday, July 31. Residents are advised to keep their windows closed during the treatment period.
County officials said the detection of West Nile virus in mosquitoes is a routine occurrence during the summer and serves as an early warning that helps identify areas where preventive mosquito-control efforts are most effective. Officials emphasized that the finding does not necessarily indicate an immediate public health threat.
While mosquito treatments have traditionally been performed in the early morning, the county said recent research shows that spraying two to three hours after dusk is more effective at targeting the mosquito species most commonly associated with West Nile virus transmission.
The treatment is part of Bergen County's ongoing integrated mosquito management program, which aims to reduce mosquito populations, lower the risk of disease transmission, and improve residents' comfort during the summer months.
