Hilarious and often poignant, Modern Orthodox is about a young Jewish couple living on the Upper West Side who are provoked to question not only their commitment to each other but also the depth of their religious feeling when a stranger from another sect arrives at their door with a most unusual marital problem.
Ben: (30’s) A successful financial consultant. He is in love with, and living with his girlfriend, Hannah, on the upper west side. A secular Jew, he is used to getting his way in business and in his relationship. He begins to question aspects of his life when confronted by Hershel.

Hershel: (20’s) An Orthodox diamond seller from Brooklyn. Other men in his family are more successful than him, but when he lands a big sale his life is turned upside down. He takes his religion very seriously. He is sweet, but most people don’t see that because he’s also very annoying.
Hannah: (30’s) A Obstetrician working at a large New York hospital. A secular Jew, she is in love with, and living with Ben. Although she is a secure, independent woman, she also appreciates the role a woman is expected to play within a family.
Rachel: (20’s) A single Orthodox Jewish girl in New York, she partakes of the social scene as far as her strict religious upbringing will allow. She is looking for a man who will raise a Jewish family with her, filled with wonderful traditions. But until she finds him, she’s not going to get tied down to one person.
Auditions will consist of readings from the script. Hershel and Rachel must look believably Jewish. Both women are referred to as being “zaftig” (chesty). Please do not read cold, and please know how to properly pronounce the Hebrew phrases. Auditions will take place on Wednesday, October 19th at 8:00pm. Scripts are available at the theater.
