Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, The Remains of the Day, is narrated by the main character Stevens, a butler in a large estate in England. This compelling psychological study and a portrait of a vanished social order span the Second World War as the narrow focus of Stevens on his work belies the larger matters at hand.
