The multi-state Mega Millions lottery has reached an estimated $500 million after no winning tickets were sold for Tuesday night's drawing.

Friday's drawing will be one of the largest in lottery history, and is expected to draw a record numbers of players as a result. Due to high turnout for Tuesday's drawing, the jackpot jumped from $363 million to $540 million.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot to date was $390 million, with two winning tickets sold for the March 6, 2007, drawing — one in New Jersey (the Villas section of Lower Township), the other in Georgia.

Mega Millions is now played in 42 states and in Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
