Fair Haven Police Remind Residents Of New E-Bike Law In NJ

FAIR HAVEN, NJ — The Fair Haven Police Department is reminding residents about a new e-bike law that took effect on July 19.

According to the department, riders must be at least 15 years old to operate an e-bike, while those under 15 are prohibited. Riders ages 17 and older must have a valid driver's license, and those 15–16 years old must obtain an e-bike/motorized bicycle license.

The law also requires all e-bikes to be registered with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC), carry liability insurance, and be equipped with a DOT-approved helmet for riders of all ages, with no exceptions.

Officials emphasized that motorized bicycles are not considered regular bicycles under the new classification. Violations can result in fines starting at $500.

The Fair Haven Police Department encourages residents to learn the new rules and ensure their e-bikes are licensed, registered, insured, and operated legally before the law takes effect.
