Rumson Seeks Bids For New ‘Jaws Of Life’-Type Rescue Tools

Rumson is looking to acquire battery-powered hydraulic extrication tools designed to help rescuers reach people trapped in vehicles.

RUMSON, NJ — Rumson is seeking bids for new battery-powered hydraulic tools designed to help emergency crews reach people trapped inside damaged vehicles.

The cutters and spreaders are the type of rescue equipment commonly called the "Jaws of Life." That name technically belongs to HURST, while Rumson is requesting equipment from the AMKUS Heavy Rescue Series or an approved equivalent.

According to a public notice issued Monday, the borough will consider new equipment as well as qualifying factory demonstration models.

Hydraulic rescue tools can cut, spread or move sections of a damaged vehicle, helping crews create a path to someone inside. Rumson's notice does not identify which department will receive the equipment, whether it will replace older tools or how much the borough expects to spend.

Sealed bids will be opened publicly at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 10 at Rumson Borough Hall, 80 East River Road.

Interested companies may request electronic copies of the bid specifications from the municipal clerk's office. Hard copies are available at Borough Hall during regular business hours for a $25 fee.

Proposals must include the required financial guarantees and arrive by mail or in person before the deadline.
