April Showers bring May... Mold?

April Showers Bring May... Mold?

Spring is close! How refreshing is it to open the windows in April and let that fresh air in, enjoying the breeze that comes with a spring rain. A month from now we’ll be thawing out from this brutal winter, attacking our spring cleaning, and preparing our yards and gardens. We’re all in full anticipation for the perfect summer that we have been dreaming of since early January. It’s easy to forget that we will eventually be cursing the humid and hot summer months,

Between the dampness of spring and the humidity of summer, your home becomes a prime environment for mold growth. There are steps you can take to ensure that mold will not overtake your home and ruin your summer.

If your basement tends to get damp in the spring, place a dehumidifier in the basement to pull the moisture out of the air. It’s also very important to vacuum carpets in your home frequently – mold is a fungus and can use the dirt in your carpet as nutrients to grow. The best way to keep carpets and air clean is to get a sweeper with a HEPA filter. HEPA stands for “high efficiency particulate absorption” – so basically the filter can capture the tiny mold spores in the air that could potentially spread throughout the house.

If you happen to notice a small area of mold, vacuum it up with a device that has a HEPA filter and wipe/scrub the area with a sponge wet with hydrogen peroxide. A common misconception is that bleach can kill mold, but really all it does is discolor it. When you have a large area of mold, it is time to contact a licensed, certified Mold Remediation company to come assess the situation and clean up the mold without spreading throughout your home. Calling in a trusted professional to asses a damp crawlspace or basement is imperative as well to make certain you and your family are breathing quality air in your most precious environment.

Finally, it would be a good idea to ask your insurance agent what coverage you have under your homeowner’s policy for mold, and find out what their conditions are. Also, make sure that you have coverage for water: back up of sewers and drains to cover your property, and cleanup costs in case water back up were to occur. Most severe mold cases happen when people try to clean up water damage on their own because they don’t have the proper insurance coverage to pay for the costs and they do not use a professional waterproofing company.
