Keansburg Cyclist, 49, Hit By Car In Atlantic Highlands
New details: The car that hit him fled the scene. The man tumbled down an embankment and had to crawl back up and flag down a passing car.

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ — A man riding a bike was hit by a car and severely injured Monday evening on Ocean Boulevard in Atlantic Highlands. Just released by Atlantic Highlands police Tuesday afternoon, here are some new details on the accident, which has left the 49-year-old Keansburg cyclist with both a leg and head injury.
The car that hit him fled the scene, police said. The impact caused the cyclist to flip over a guardrail and down a steep embankment, where he laid for some time before being able to crawl back up and flag down a passing car for help.
The accident happened at approximately 3:52 p.m. on Monday, July 23. The cyclist collided with a car and then flipped over the guard rail and down a steep embankment in the area of Ocean Blvd. near Lawrie Road, Atlantic Highlands Police Chief Gerry Vasto said.

The bicyclist reportedly laid there for some time but able to eventually crawl up the embankment to the main roadway and flag down a passing motorist who called for help. The 49-year-old Keansburg man was airlifted by medevac to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for a head and leg injury.
The vehicle possibly involved in the crash is described as a black or dark-colored Dodge Ram pick-up, which may have driver side mirror damage, Chief Vasto said. This is currently under investigation and anyone who witnessed or has information regarding this incident is urged to contact Sgt. Harry Murtha or Ptl. The Atlantic Highlands Fire Department, Atlantic Highlands First Aid Squad and MONOC also assisted at the scene.
The hit and run was first reported by the Atlantic Highlands Herald.
