Wow that would be an awesome name for a band wouldn’t it??? It’s actually something that cat owners deal with frequently this time of year. Whether its’s the passing storm and the boom of thunder or the celebratory kaboom of summertime fireworks, it’s all the same to the feverishly scattering felines! Yes thunderstorm season is here and the Fourth of July is quickly making it’s way. So what can we do to help our furry feline family members feel more safe and secure? I have a few tips I can share to help your kitty be a little more comfortable……
1. Make sure they have a safe place to hide. I have a little pillow fort in my closet that seems to be a big hit!
2. Calming treats, Rescue Remedy and Feliway are a few good things to keep in the cabinet this time of year.

3 Desensitization is an option if this is a regular occurrence where you live. You can purchase a CD that has the sounds of a storm and play this quietly and reward your kitty for staying calm while soothing her. It is a process so patience and rewards are the key.
4. Some have found The Thundershirt can work for kitties as well. Not mine, but I have heard from friends that they have helped.

5 Medication is a last resort and for severe cases. If you feel this is your only option have a conversation with your vet.
I hope these ideas give you and your furry family some calm in the storm this summer. It’s a wonderful time of year and we all should be enjoying it…. even Fluffy and Mr. Whiskers!
