MONMOUTH BEACH, NJ — A 64-year-old Newark man collapsed on Monmouth Beach Sunday and had to be saved by a lifeguard there, according to a report in the Asbury Park Press.
The beaches in Monmouth Beach don't open until 10 a.m. so lifeguard Jeremy Julio was not on duty yet.
"I was at the Monmouth Beach bathing pavilion and there was this woman who ran up in panic," said Julio, 35, an Oceanport resident. "She said there was someone who was unconscious."

The man had collapsed in ankle-deep water shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday. He had just walked into the ocean water when he collapsed, suffering an apparent cardiac arrest.
Julio grabbed the automated external defibrillator (AED) and shocked the man's heart to get it beating again. He also began CPR. The man started breathing again after three to four rounds of CPR. The man had regained consciousness when Monmouth Beach police officer Lisa Costello arrived on the scene. He was taken to Monmouth Medical Center for treatment.
