New Nike Missile Now On Display At Sandy Hook

This new, deactivated missile comes to Sandy Hook from the National Guard Museum in Sea Girt on a long-term loan.

HIGHLANDS, NJ — A new Cold War-era Nike Missile is now up and on display at Gateway National Recreation Area, Sandy Hook Unit.

The mobile missile and its launcher were transferred to Sandy Hook last week and they currently can be seen by park visitors at Nike Radar Site (Parking Lot L).

This new, deactivated missile comes to Sandy Hook from the National Guard Museum in Sea Girt on a long-term loan. The missile, which was built for use during the Cold War, but never actually fired, will help the National Park Service continue to be able to tell the story of Cold War defenses at Sandy Hook.

Sandy Hook was a strategic defense site for New York City during the Cold War and several active missiles were kept there during well into the 1980s.

The Sandy Hook Foundation paid for the cost of the move.
