As we count down to the opening of the beach clubs, wash off our grills and perhaps get ready to march in or watch a parade; one can sense the palpable loosening of stress. Soon the long lazy days of Summer will be upon us and that awful Winter will be remembered in sudden and slight shivers.
Moms are getting their helpers and babysitters, so they can enjoy some of the Summer themselves, or perhaps because they have to keep working even when their children are no longer in a structured day at school.
We live in an affluent community, with luxury cars, beautiful houses and designer label clothes, and lets face it, we like the way it looks because the affluence brings order and beauty to our streets with professional landscaping and pristine paint jobs.Lets us not forget in our "peninsula bubble" that there are people that do not have the luxury of looking forward to the Summer, they may know they cannot afford the electricity bills of air conditioning, or may not have a/c at all and just swelter through the long days. The single mom, who has to work, even the married couple who both have to work to carry the load. The neighbors that are old and alone, or the family that ice cream is a "treat" not an ordinary expectation on the way home from the beach. Those that are sick, who can only look out of a window at the sun.My intent is not to preach, just to gently remind myself that everyone has a story and all stories have twists and turns. It is not my place to judge another, but to try to be tolerant and understand that most people's attitudes have nothing to do with us, they are going through their own story and today may not be a good page.
