SANDY HOOK GATEWAY NATIONAL RECREATION AREA — Watch the video below as the Marine Mammal Stranding Center released three seals back into the wild Monday at Sandy Hook.

The four-person staff, and many volunteers, of the Brigantine-based Marine Mammal Center rescues sick or injured marine mammals up and down the 1,800 miles of New Jersey coastline. They saved a porpoise that got stuck in a Keansburg creek last spring and monitor New Jersey's humpback whale population.

They nurse the animals back to health and Sandy Hook is a favorite spot for the animals to be released back into the wild. This will be their last public animal release until after the summer is over. They usually release the animals privately, and do not let the public know ahead of time. Too many people can make the seals very scared.

They're also the same group that tried to save a dolphin that got stuck in an Old Bridge river in 2015, but the dolphin sadly died.

If you come across a sick or injured seal on a New Jersey beach, the center has a 24-hour emergency number — (609) 266-0538 — or you can report it on their website: http://www.mmsc.org/strandings/report-a-stranding
