14-Year-Old Bicyclist Hit By SUV On His Birthday In Fanwood

The teen, who was hit while riding his bicycle in Fanwood Saturday and pinned under an SUV, is expected to make a full recovery, police say.

FANWOOD, NJ — A 14-year-old bicyclist, who was hit by an SUV and flown to a hospital on his birthday Saturday, is expected to make a full recovery, Fanwood Police Captain Kevin Grimmer said.

Around 10 a.m. on Saturday, the teen boy was riding his bicycle in the area of La Grande Avenue and Helen Street when he was hit by a car, Grimmer said.

The boy was pinned under the SUV before being flown by New Jersey State Police helicopter to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for emergency treatment.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and has been cooperative, Grimmer said.

The circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation.

Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr spoke with the boy's father who said the teen "is injured and will take some time to fully recover but it could have been much worse."

"He wanted to express his deep gratitude to Fanwood's first responders — including those who came from Plainfield and Scotch Plains — who were there so quickly and took such good care of his son in what is best described as every parent's worst nightmare," Mahr said after speaking with the teen's father.
