SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — A Scotch Plains resident reported losing $42,000 in an email scam after believing they were sending a payment to someone connected to a business they were working with, according to police.
The incident was reported on June 5.
According to police, the resident received emails from someone who appeared to be associated with a business they had been dealing with. The emails included instructions for a payment, and the resident later wired $42,000.
Police said the person behind the scam was using an email address that closely resembled the legitimate email address of the business contact.
The resident later learned the payment had not gone to the intended recipient and reported the incident to police.
Authorities did not release additional details about the case, and no information about a suspect was provided.
The matter remains under investigation.
