SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — If you are a Scotch Plains resident wondering why your third-quarter property tax bill has not arrived yet, township officials say there is a simple reason: the town is still waiting for the final 2026 tax rate.
The township said it is awaiting the finalized tax rate from the Union County Board of Taxation before third-quarter tax amounts can be calculated and bills can be made available to residents.
The third-quarter property tax payment is normally due Aug. 1, but officials said the grace period will be extended to give residents enough time to review and pay their bills once the final amounts are available.
"When we have a confirmed tax rate, third-quarter tax amounts will show on our online payment portal," the township said in its weekly update.
Once the tax rate is finalized, residents will be able to view and print their tax bills online, make a one-time payment or sign up for AutoPay through the township’s payment portal.
The delay is connected to the annual process of setting property tax rates, which involves multiple levels of government, including county tax officials.
Scotch Plains officials said they will provide an update once the final tax rate has been received and the third-quarter tax bills are available.
Residents with questions can contact the Tax Collector’s Office at (908) 322-6700, extensions 207 or 208, or email .
The township also reminded residents that sewer bills were previously mailed and are due Sept. 1.
