SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — When Zianna Patel began researching her hometown for an essay contest, she did not expect to uncover a story about Scotch Plains’ role in the Revolutionary War.
But as the incoming fourth grader at Brunner Elementary School learned more about the community where she lives, one detail stood out: a historic house that survived after being struck by a cannonball.
"I was really surprised that a cannonball hit the Osborn house, but the house still did not fall down," Zianna said. "That made me realize the building has a very strong foundation and that house is still standing and visitors can take a tour."
That discovery became part of the essay that earned Zianna recognition as a winner of Congressman Kean’s “Celebrating America’s 250th” essay contest.
Zianna said she chose to write about Scotch Plains because learning more about her hometown helped her discover stories she never knew existed.
"I wrote about my town because I learned so many interesting facts about it, and town events and school field trips helped me learn more about Scotch Plains, which gave me ideas for my essay," Zianna said.
In her essay, Zianna highlighted several important parts of Scotch Plains history, including Malcolm E. Nottingham, the Osborn Cannonball House and “Bloody Gap,” where George Washington and his army fought during the Revolutionary War.
The history of “Bloody Gap” stood out to Zianna because it showed her the important role her hometown played during the country’s early years.
"It showed how important my town was during that time," Zianna said.
Through her research, Zianna said she gained a new appreciation for Scotch Plains and became more interested in learning about the history of her community and surrounding towns.
Being selected as a contest winner was a memorable moment for Zianna.
"Being chosen as a winner made me feel really proud, happy and special," Zianna said. "It was exciting to know my work was recognized as part of the big celebration of America’s 250th anniversary."
The recognition also encouraged Zianna to continue exploring local history.
"This encourages me to learn and explore more about neighboring towns and their contribution to America’s story," she said.
Outside of school, Zianna enjoys playing soccer with her travel team, reading in her cozy space, listening to music and dancing to her favorite songs.
She hopes other students in Scotch Plains take the opportunity to learn more about the history around them.
"I hope other students and kids from Scotch Plains learn more about the history of their community," Zianna said. "I hope it makes them proud of where they live and inspires more kids to join contests like this in the future."
For Zianna, the essay became more than a writing assignment. It became a chance to discover that some of the most interesting stories about America’s past can be found right in her own hometow
