SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — Scotch Plains firefighters are heading into local schools as Fire Prevention Week begins Sunday.
Firefighters will visit kindergarteners and first-graders throughout the school district as part of an education campaign, according to a message from Councilman Roc White.
Fire Prevention Week runs through Oct. 10.
White encouraged families to check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, review escape plans and discuss where family members should meet outside during an emergency.
"If a fire does occur, get outside, stay outside and call 911," White said.
He also reminded residents not to leave cooking unattended and to keep matches and lighters away from children.
He also thanked the Scotch Plains Fire Department and other emergency responders for their service.
