NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) has transformed college athletics by allowing student-athletes to earn income from endorsements, social media, merchandise, appearances, and other business opportunities while maintaining their eligibility to compete. Dann Kabala will trace the evolution of NIL, discuss its far-reaching impact on college sports, and examine how the transfer portal and athlete compensation are reshaping today's collegiate landscape.&nbsp; Dann is Vice President of Name, Image, and Likeness at Rutgers University, where he oversees third-party NIL operations for all sports. Before joining Rutgers in January 2026, he spent eight seasons at Penn State, leading its NIL program and its 5th Quarter/Player Development department. FANWOOD, N.J. — Why We Dance, a community initiative organized by Candace Waller, will host a free, open-level AfroBeats dance workshop on Sunday, August 30, at 3 p.m. at the Forest Road Park Building, 154 Forest Road, Fanwood, N.J. The event will bring residents together through dance while promoting fitness, wellness, health education and community connection through the arts.
Led by Shari LP, a New Jersey-based choreographer, dancer and dance educator with more than seven years of teaching experience, the workshop is designed for dancers of all levels, including those with little or no previous dance experience. The event will also feature refreshments and crafts.
Shari has taught throughout the tri-state area at dance studios, schools and community organizations, including Broadway Dance Center in New York City. As a choreographer, she has created work for music videos, live performances, festivals, showcases and independent artists.
Her passion for teaching extends beyond choreography. Shari is dedicated to helping dancers move from self-doubt to self-expression by creating an environment where movement feels accessible, empowering and joyful. She encourages students to build confidence, develop their artistry and connect with others through dance.
“Dance is more than learning steps,” Shari says. “It is about finding your voice, building confidence and connecting with others through movement.”
Through Why We Dance, Waller aims to make dance and wellness accessible to the community while creating opportunities for people to connect through the arts. The August 30 workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to experience AfroBeats dance in a welcoming, supportive environment while learning about the physical, social and creative benefits of movement.
The event is part of Waller’s broader commitment to using the arts to encourage healthy lifestyles, wellness and community engagement.

Congregation Beth Israel (CBI) in Scotch Plains will hold its annual family service on Erev Rosh Hashanah, Friday evening, September 11, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.This child-friendly service is free and open to the community. 
The one-hour service will usher in the Jewish New Year and Shabbat with songs, stories and prayers. Rabbi Howard Tilman and Cantor Jacob Greenberg will officiate.
“The Rosh Hashanah family service is a beautiful way to begin the holiday together as a Jewish community,” said Rabbi Tilman. “Welcoming people of all backgrounds, experience levels and ages reflects so much of what we strive to be. The New Year is a time of hope, possibility, and renewed connection to our identity, and we invite the wider community to join in this special Rosh Hashanah celebration.”

ABOUT MEAN GIRLS, THE MUSICAL With a book by Tina Fey and music and lyrics by Jeff Richmond and Nell Benjamin, Mean Girls, The Musical is a sharp, hilarious, and surprisingly heartfelt story about surviving the social jungle of high school. Based on Fey's iconic 2004 film — itself inspired by Rosalind Wiseman's book Queen Bees and Wannabes — the musical premiered at Washington, D.C.'s National Theatre in October 2017 before opening on Broadway in 2018, where it went on to win the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical.

Packed with chart-topping songs, razor-sharp humor, and a message about the power of authenticity, Mean Girls, The Musical is a celebration of what happens when you stop trying to fit in and start owning who you are.

Mean Girls, The Musical: LIVE ON STAGE at the Dunellen Theatre

The Fanwood Performance Series presents an evening of jazz featuring The James Austin Jr. Trio and pianist/composer Ellie Lee.
Austin's trio will perform “Songs in the Key of Wonder &amp; More” – a program featuring tasteful arrangements of compositions by Stevie Wonder, along with jazz standards.
Lee's work blends a variety of styles including jazz, classical, pop, R&amp;B/soul and gospel.&nbsp;The show takes place in the Patricia M. Kuran Cultural Arts Center at the Carriage House, on Watson Road just west of Martine Avenue, next to Fanwood Borough Hall. The suggested donation for admission is $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors – cash at the door.

Austin, who hails from Chicago, has performed alongside an illustrious list of singers and musicians in diverse settings throughout the world, and served as pianist and arranger for two star-studded concerts at Carnegie Hall. He is regularly featured as a pianist and bandleader for various live concerts, theatrical performances, and civic and charitable events around the New York-New Jersey metro area. He has curated and led the NJPAC Jazz Jam Session series since its inception.
Lee grew up in Seoul, South Korea, and moved to the U.S. when she was awarded a scholarship to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. She later received a Master of Music degree from William Paterson University in Wayne. In addition to performing extensively in the New York-New Jersey area, Lee teaches as an adjunct professor at Felician University in Rutherford.

Ricky Riccardi, a two-time Grammy-winning author and director of research collections for the Louis Armstrong House Museum in Corona, Queens, NY., will be our speaker. Not many Louis Armstrong fans are aware of the circumstances he had to overcome in his early days. Growing up in the toughest part of New Orleans, Armstrong was lucky to make it out alive, but music found him at an early age and he never looked back. Ricky will tell the tale of Armstrong's early days, as well as his triumphs in Chicago and New York, before he went on to change the world.

The Seeing Eye is a philanthropic organization whose mission is to enhance the independence, dignity, and self-confidence of people who are blind through the use of Seeing Eye® dogs. In pursuit of this mission, The Seeing Eye trains Seeing Eye dogs to guide people who are blind and instructs them in the proper use, handling, and care of their dogs. To share how this life-changing work is accomplished, one of The Seeing Eye's guide dog mobility instructors will join Kyle Street, a Seeing Eye graduate. Together, they will provide an inside look at the training of a Seeing Eye dog, while Kyle shares his firsthand experience of partnering with a Seeing Eye dog and the profound impact it has had on his daily life.
