Caller Claims To Be Bank Examiner. Resident Hands Over $15K

The resident became suspicious when the caller asked for additional money, police said.

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — A Union County resident handed over $15,000 after a caller claimed to be a bank examiner and instructed them to withdraw cash, police said.

The incident was reported June 16.

Police said the caller told the resident they were a fraud examiner working on behalf of a financial institution and said the money needed to be withdrawn and verified in person.

The resident withdrew $15,000 and provided the cash to the individual, police said.

After the exchange, the caller asked for additional money.
