Celebrate NJ Makers Day at Scotch Plains Public Library

Scotch Plains Public Library will host NJ Makers Day STEAM activities on Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23.

On Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23, the Scotch Plains Public Library, and more than 200 participating sites across New Jersey, will celebrate making, maker culture, and STEAM-based (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) learning for all ages at the fifth annual NJ Makers Day.

The maker movement in the United States isn’t just a hobby; it’s having a significant impact on school curriculum development and growing local economies by providing access to people, information, resources, and tools that facilitate making to a wide variety of skill levels.

Hands-on events include a sewing class for adults, a littleBits Coding class for middle schoolers, a paper airplane workshop with 4H Union County, and a HealthBarn cooking class for children ages 5-8. Families can take on our 3nd annual Family Maker Challenge, in which they will create a Marshmallow Peeps diorama inspired by a favorite story. Online registration is required for these events, limited to Scotch Plains and Fanwood cardholders. Please visit the library website for more information: www.scotlib.org/makersday/.

In addition to the above events, on Saturday from 10am to 12pm, the community is invited to make a stress ball and explore littleBits, Makey Makeys, and LEGOs on the lower level. Upstairs, activities will include making a button, paperback hedgehogs, origami bookmarks, straw builders, as well as Family Storytime & Craft. From 3 to 4pm, our bookbinding machine will be available for making a notepad. No registration is needed for these activities, but supplies are limited.

The Scotch Plains Public Library is located at 1927 Bartle Avenue, one block from Park Avenue in the center of town.
