Countywide Police Chase Of Armed Robber Ends In Scotch Plains

A stolen vehicle was chased from Elizabeth to Scotch Plains where it rammed a police car. One suspect ran away on foot: Police.

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — A wild police chase of an alleged armed robber crossed through multiple Union County towns before ending with an arrest in Scotch Plains.

On Sunday, Dec. 30 at 10:38 p.m. an attempted armed robbery was reported on Canton Street in Elizabeth, Kelly Martins, Elizabeth Public Information Officer said.

Police saw the stolen vehicle on West Grand Street and chased it into Scotch Plains, where it rammed one of the Elizabeth police cars, Martins said.

The driver, a 36-year-old man from Elizabeth, whose name was not released was arrested but a second black passenger ran away. Union County canine dogs chased after the second man but he got away, Martins said.

The driver was charged with armed robbery, alluding, aggravated assault and possession of a stolen vehicle.

One officer received a hand injury as a result.

Westfield and Cranford Police Departments also assisted in the pursuit.
