Monroe Township, NJ —Forsgate Country Club announced that the 7th Annual R.A. Schiavone Memorial Cup will take place September 25-26 on the historic Banks Course. The two-day pro-senior stroke play tournament, which is contested on the par-71 course designed by Charles Banks in 1931, is sanctioned by both the New Jersey PGA Section and the New Jersey State Golf Association.
The Schiavone Cup is named in honor of longtime Garden State golf course owner/investor Ronald A. Schiavone (1925-2011). The founder of Schiavone Construction Company, he built large portions of the New Jersey Turnpike, including Interchange 8A, the exit adjacent to Forsgate Country Club.
“This event honors a man who contributed to golf in New Jersey, even though he was not a golfer himself. As a founder of the state’s largest country club, the 54-hole Fiddler’s Elbow, and primary owner of Forsgate Country Club for more than a decade, Ron Schiavone provided the entrepreneurial vision that helped elevate the quality of the game in the Garden State,” said Christopher Schiavone, Forsgate’s Managing Partner. “My introduction to golf and my education in the club business – from summer jobs at the clubs he owned to assisting him in its management – are owed to him, and I thought it fitting that an event should be created in his honor.”
Open to senior amateur players and golf professionals who have reached their 50th birthday on or before August 1 and with a handicap index of 12.0 or less, the event begins on September 25 with 18 holes of stroke play for the senior amateur players. On September 26, the senior amateurs will return to the club with the professional joining them in a team match concurrent with the second round of the individual amateur medal play. On that day, while competing as a team, the pros will also be participating in an Individual Pro Medal Play Championship, featuring a $5,000 purse ($2,000 first place). The traditional steak and lobster dinner and awards presentation will cap off the tournament activities.
“A fan of the individual amateur competition, my father recognized that the over-50 golfer was a big contributor to his business, and he would be pleased with an event that focused on that group of golfers,” added Schiavone.
The entry fee for this event is $350 and includes both days for Senior Amateurs and Professionals. The field is limited to 60 teams. For more information or to register a team, contact Mike Furey or Carolyn McKenzie Andrews at 732-656-8959.
