Free 7th Grade Initiative Program returning to the Y this Fall

The Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA is excited to bring back its free 7th Grade Initiative Program for incoming 7th graders residing in Scotch Plains, Fanwood and Clark beginning September 7, 2021. The Y is also offering a bonus for 8th graders who were unable to participate in the program last year.

The 7th Grade Initiative Program - which runs Sept. 7, 2021-June 30, 2022 – offers teens a free membership to the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA. The membership gives them access to free programming included with Y membership such as open gym, open swim and the Teen Wellness program as well as fee-based programming available at member rates. This includes Sports Programs such as Middle School Track and Tae Kwon Do, Middle School Night Out, swim lessons, gymnastics and private music lessons.

The Fanwood-Scotch Plains Y recognizes that 7th grade is a pivotal and transitional time for many teens, a point when they are given the freedom to choose how they spend their out-of-school hours. The Y wants to support and encourage kids to make good decisions and form habits that lead to an overall healthy lifestyle. The 7th Grade Initiative program provides opportunities for fitness and life skills training, as well as an opportunity to socialize with peers in a safe, supervised and conveniently located environment.

This free membership also demonstrates the Y’s commitment to the healthy development of the whole person. Free 7th Grade membership is largely supported through donations to the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA’s annual fundraising campaign.

Plus for 8th graders – who were unable to participate in the program last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic – the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Y is offering a bonus. Eighth graders residing in Scotch Plains, Fanwood and Clark can receive a free Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA membership for the month of September 2021, followed by 50% off their membership in October 2021. The full Teen Membership rate will then apply in November 2021 if the 8th grader continues their membership.

It’s easy to get started with both the 7th grade and 8th grade memberships. Just bring the following to the YMCA Welcome Center (sign up starts Sept. 1 for 8th graders and Sept. 7 for 7th graders):

1. Your school ID, roster or report card

2. A parent/guardian*

3. Sign a code of conduct

4. Complete a few quick forms and begin your membership!

*Both parent/guardian and 7th or 8th grader must be present to activate membership.
