A sunny and seasonably warm Saturday greeted the opening day of the Scotch Plains Farmers' Market on June 5. Now in its 19th year, the market will operate every Saturday from 8 am to 2 pm through November 6. The Scotch Plains Business and Professional Association (SPBPA) organizes and manages the market, which has proved popular with local residents.
This year promises to be a great one according to Lisa Mohn, SPBPA's president and this year's market manager. Mohn, owner of the Apple Blossom Flower Shop, and Jeffrey R. Stein, who formerly managed the market, explained the market's formula for success. "Every year, we invite a varied and limited number of top-quality, experienced vendors, who have a passion for what they do, and have them provide an engaging variety of fresh grown produce, delicious handmade baked goods, and gourmet-style food products."
In addition to locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables, last Saturday's vendors offered shoppers the opportunity to buy fresh baked bread and baked goods, granola, pickles, vegetarian quiches, honey, jellies, soaps, a hot dog or two – and more. The SPBPA has planed a series of special market day events, including the annual Ray Pardon Memorial Blood Drive, Farmer's Market Fun Day (for the kids), and in a nod to the environment, Farmer's Market Green Day.
