How Much Is COVID Spreading In Union County With Delta Emerging?

The delta variant accounts for 80 percent of cases in New Jersey over a 4-week period.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — New Jersey has seen an uptick in coronavirus cases. But what does that mean for Union County?

The county averaged 51 new cases per day in the past week, while averaging 32 new daily cases the prior week, according to the New Jersey Department of Health.

Despite the recent growth in new cases, that may mean only a few new infections a week in certain towns — or none in smaller municipalities.

But officials continue to monitor the delta variant, which accounted for 80 percent of coronavirus cases in New Jersey over a four-week period ending on Aug. 3, CDC numbers show.

"It's twice as infectious," Andy Slavitt, a former member of President Joe Biden's Covid Response Team, told CNN. "Fortunately, unlike 2020, we actually have a tool that stops the delta variant in its tracks: It's called vaccine."
