Scotch Plains Approves FIFA World Cup Viewing Party This Summer
The Township Council unanimously granted a special use permit for up to 11 match-day events at the Park Avenue bar and restaurant.
SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — Scotch Plains has approved a special use permit for a FIFA World Cup viewing party at Darby Road, the Park Avenue bar and restaurant, with events planned across nine to 11 match dates this summer.
The Township Council voted unanimously on May 19 to grant the permit and a revocable license to the Scotch Plains Soccer Association and Darby Road, represented by co-owner Joe Mortarulo of Brave Spirits LLC.
Mortarulo told the council the final plan came together after extensive coordination with township officials, police, and fire departments.

"I had started out with a really robust plan, and through mitigation and concerns with public safety, I think we eventually came to a great common ground where I think everyone's going to be happy," Mortarulo said. "The township's going to be vibrant and thriving on those days."
Two of the viewing dates remain tentative pending the tournament schedule. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is being hosted across North America, with matches at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.
