Scotch Plains Breast Cancer Walk Returns Oct. 3: Registration Open

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — Registration is open for the annual Rose Checchio Walk to Wipe Out Breast Cancer, returning to Scotch Plains Saturday, Oct. 3.

Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m., and the walk starts at 9 a.m. at 430 Park Avenue, according to the township.

Registration costs $25 for adults and $10 for children 12 and younger. The township says 100% of net proceeds benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

The walk honors Rose Checchio, who served nearly four years on the Township Council and was involved in creating the Scotch Plains Garden Club, Trunk or Treat celebration and community garden, Councilwoman Elizabeth Stamler said.

For those who knew Checchio, the walk offers a chance to remember “a friend, neighbor and dedicated public servant,” according to Stamler. For those who did not have the opportunity to meet her, Stamler said the event is a chance to learn about “a woman whose influence is still very much a part of Scotch Plains.”

More than 35,000 people participate annually in Play for P.I.N.K. events across 30 states, according to the organization. Play for P.I.N.K. says its efforts have raised more than $92 million for breast cancer research, with more than 250 events held each year.

“We walk together,” Stamler said. “We support neighbors and friends whose families have been touched by breast cancer.”

Residents interested in taking part in the Oct. 3 walk can register or donate online ahead of the event.
