Scotch Plains Kids Sell Lemonade To Help Injured Kitten

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — Three Scotch Plains children came together to help an injured 4-week-old kitten who they lovingly named “Van Gogh since he was missing an ear.

The children found the kitten on June 9 off the street on Park Avenue in the township. They recognized he was going to need medical attention, which costs money.

To help, the children set up a lemonade stand and sold lemonade for 25 cents a cup. In one day, the kids raised $150.80 for Van Gogh and brought him to Summit Animal Rescue Association (SARA) where he is being cared for by a foster mom, according to Lisa Rotella who wanted to recognize the kids' efforts.

“It was awesome,” said Julia Melton, fundraising chairman for SARA “They found the kitty and got it to us to foster and knowing the expenses involved to help this little guy, they were responsible enough to get together to help with the costs. It is wonderful how they were able to put their minds together.”

Van Gogh did go to the vet a few times last week and tested negative for Feline Leukemia.

“So far so good, he is up and running and playing and having the time of his life,” Melton said.

Currently, Van Gogh is in isolation until all his tests are cleared. Melton estimates the kitty will be ready for adoption in a few weeks.

SARA is a a non-profit organization that runs completely off donations and because of that Melton was blown away by the kids actions.

“It’s an amazing thing these young children did to help an animal in need,” Melton said. “I am blown away by their dedication. I was elated that these little kids had it in their minds to do this. It's inspiring to see how much children love animals.”

SARA also hosts pet adoption days on Saturdays at the Pet Valu in Garwood and Gillette.
