SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — Ever since Mark Zacharia’s father pulled a quarter out his ear at the age of 7, the Scotch Plains local had an itch and passion to entertain.

Zacharia, who has lived in the township for 26 years with his wife and two children, first began with studying and performing magic and has since broadened his talents to becoming a mentalist and a hypnosist.

Now he performs weekly at theaters in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York and also performs for smaller groups such as weddings, birthdays and at local restaurants such as Maggiano’s in Bridgewater.

Zacharia studied and honed his skills to tailor each performance based on the setting.

“What distinguishes me is my level of respect for my audience,” Zacharia said. “I do not perform cliche material. It’s all about how I treat my audience. As a hypnotist I assure people that I will not embarrass them. That is the toughest hurdle you have to clear to gain their trust.”

Having a logical and playful mind, becoming a mentalist also came naturally to him.

“I am not claiming to have supernatural powers, it is about the power of observation,” Zacharia said. “I am able to identify things and know things because the person I am working with is subconsciously transmitting things to me.”

Zacharia has been performing for more than 25 years and has plans going on tour outside of the country.

“My key feature is being able to get the best reactions from your audiences. Whether I am commanding the attention of a boardroom full of executives, a living room filled with adults, a college filled with students, a theater full of families or a house filled with guests, I know how to amaze and amuse,” he said.
