Scotch Plains Weekend Is Coming: What To Know

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — If you’re making plans for the first weekend of October, Scotch Plains has four events on the calendar, starting next Friday evening and continuing through Sunday afternoon.

“Autumn has a way of bringing Scotch Plains outside,” Councilmember Ellen Zimmerman wrote in her message to residents. “This year, the first weekend of October gives us four very different reasons to reconnect.”

The township’s family movie night starts Friday, Oct. 2 at the Alan M. Augustine Village Green, 430 Park Avenue. Pumpkin painting begins at 6 p.m. while supplies last, followed by a showing of the 2019 animated film “The Addams Family” at 7:15 p.m. The movie is rated PG and runs 86 minutes, and attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

On Saturday, Oct. 3, the Rose Checchio Walk to Wipe Out Breast Cancer begins at the Scotch Plains Municipal Building, 430 Park Avenue. Check-in starts at 8:30 a.m., with the walk at 9 a.m. Registration costs $25 for adults and $10 for children 12 and younger. Net proceeds benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation through Play for P.I.N.K.

Also Saturday, Scotch Plains Parks & Recreation’s Fall FreeCycle Market takes place at Jerseyland Park, 2354 Beryllium Road. Shopping is free and open to everyone from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Item drop-off requires advance registration and is limited to Scotch Plains residents.

Anyone dropping off items must sort them into accepted categories, pack them in boxes and make sure they’re in working order. The market accepts children’s toys, puzzles and games, seasonal decorations, small appliances, kitchenware without glass, sports equipment, DVDs and video games. Books, glass, clothing, shoes, electronics, bicycles and car seats are not accepted.

The weekend ends Sunday with Scotch Plains Day and Car Show on East 2nd Street and Park Avenue from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The free event will feature cars, trucks and motorcycles, along with trophies, music, food and drinks, vendors and family activities. Hot 97’s DJ Drewski is scheduled to appear, as are Train Wreck, the DeLorean car and the original Batmobile.

Car-show roll-in begins at 10 a.m., and drivers should use the entrance at 401-423 Flanders Avenue. All vehicle makes and models are welcome, and registration is not required.

“I also want to recognize the township employees, Parks and Recreation staff, public safety personnel and volunteers whose planning and work make a full weekend like this possible,” Councilmember Ellen Zimmerman said.
