Taking tours
Mrs. Maria Stetin’s third grade students continued an Academy tradition by taking a walk to and a tour of the Osborn Cannonball House in Scotch Plains. The small, white, clapboard house, located on East Front Street, was built in the 1700’s along the route that both the British and Continental soldiers marched during the Revolutionary War. At the Cannonball House, our students learned how different life was in colonial times, such as living without electricity or running water. The students learned how people had to grow most of their food, and make their own clothes and bedding. They also learned that some things in the 21st century are similar to colonial times such as children’s toys, cradles for babies to sleep in, and people still drink tea. The students had a wonderful time going back in time.

Recently, the seventh and eighth grade students also went on a tour - a virtual tour of the newly built One World Trade Center. Mr. Andrew Judd, a school parent whose company is involved with leasing the building, told the students about the development of One World Trade Center, and how the building’s inner workings, including its life-safety systems, were designed to be safer and more advanced than any other building in the world. The students learned that the average floor size of One World Trade Center is almost ten times the size of the school’s gymnasium. Mr. Judd also introduced the students to the basics of commercial real estate including strategies to entice companies to lease space in the new building. We are grateful to Mr. Judd for taking the time out of his busy schedule to spend some time with our students.
