The A, B, C’s of New Jersey and Celebrating Catholic Schools Week

In their studies of New Jersey, Mrs. Maryellen Lamb’s fourth grade students recently completed a cross-curricular project involving social studies, writing, art, and public speaking.  To spark the student’s interest and creativity, Mrs. Lamb read the class G is for Garden State, by Eileen Cameron. Using each letter of the alphabet, the book explores the places, people, and landmarks that make New Jersey a fascinating place.  Next, each student chose a letter of the alphabet and found a person, place, or thing in New Jersey that starts with that letter.   Then the children researched and wrote about their chosen topic, and drew or obtained a photo to best represent their topic. Finally, they wrote a short poem to describe their topic. The students assembled the photos, paragraphs, and poems on posters and presented their projects orally to their class and will also present them to the third graders.  Some of the topics included, B is for Belmar, Q for Quick Chek, V for Frankie Valli, and H for Hadrosaurus.  If you want to learn some interesting facts about New Jersey be sure to visit the second floor, the projects are posted outside the fourth grade classroom.

Last week our school celebrated the 40th anniversary of Catholic Schools Week themed Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service.  The school community celebrated in many ways including, each class hosting morning and lunchtime prayer, geography, math and spelling bees, and service projects.  The service projects included a Prayer Chain of Intentions, a penny race for the missions, and monetary donations for St. Jude’s Children Hospital.  The children also collected various personal hygiene and household cleaners for the St. Bartholomew Food Pantry.  We are very proud that our children continually strive to achieve their best academically and recognize those who are in need around us, in our community, and in our world.
