Union County Man Who Fired Gun At Occupied Car, Fled To Florida Pleads Guilty
A Union County man admitted illegally possessing ammunition after police say he fire multiple gunshots toward a car with people inside.
ELIZABETH, NJ — A Union County man admitted illegally possessing ammunition after police say he fired multiple gunshots toward a car with people inside and then fled to Florida, Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig announced.
Kevin Cordeiro, 34, of Elizabeth, pleaded guilty Monday to an indictment charging him with one count of possessing ammunition after having been previously convicted of a felony offense.
On Feb. 27, Cordeiro fired multiple gunshots toward an occupied vehicle that was parked on Westfield Avenue in Elizabeth. Police found eight .45 caliber shell casings from the shooting scene, according to documents filed in this case and statements made in court.

After the shooting, Cordeiro fled to Florida and was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service on March 29. Cordeiro was previously convicted of second-degree robbery in New Jersey Superior Court, for which he was sentenced to six years in prison.
The count for illegally possessing ammunition carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Sentencing is scheduled for March 9, 2022.
