Mrs. Maria Stetin’s third grade students recently embarked on a writing project that focused on each child's self-esteem. Initially, the students read the book The Best Part of Me by Wendy Ewald which is a collection of poems and short essays, written by children, about their favorite body part. Next, the children talked about their favorite body parts - including their hands, feet, eyes, and brains - and then wrote short paragraphs explaining why it was their favorite. Finally, Mrs. Stetin took pictures of each of the students’ favorite parts and the pictures were presented with the paragraph as a small poster. The third graders were very enthusiastic about the project and learned that they are all special in their own way. The posters are displayed in the hallway outside the third grade classroom.
Our middle school girls recently competed in an all-girls Forensics meet at Mount St. Mary Academy in Watchung. Eighth graders Samantha Amo and Hanna Guarnuccio; seventh graders Hannah Beckman, Karen Degnan, and Vanessa Sousa; sixth graders Nola Gialanella, Gabrielle Mack, Jessica Mongold, Eve Parker, Caitlin Roder, and Melanie Valliciergo competed in categories such as Declamation, Prose and Poetry, and Dramatic Duo. Samantha Amo placed Second for Declamation with Beth Chapman’s Stand Up for America speech and Melanie Valliciergo placed Second in Prose and Poetry for reading a portion of The Giving Tree by Marc Silverstein. We are so proud of the students’ hard work and congratulate them! There are four Forensics meets remaining this year and we wish all of our competitors the best of luck!
