YMCA completes first phase of building expansion project
The Fanwood-Scotch Plains Y unveiled two new fitness studios during a grand opening celebration
The first phase of the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA’s building expansion project is complete. On Friday, November 4, the Y held a grand opening celebration for its two new studios, located on the building’s lower level. Members, staff and volunteers were invited to take a tour of the new studios and learn about the future of the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA.
The studios are now open for classes such as yoga, Pilates, barre and cycle. With elevator access to the Y’s lower level, individuals of all abilities and levels will be able to participate in programs held in the studios. This includes the Y’s chronic disease prevention programs for individuals with MS, Parkinson’s and arthritis.
“We are excited to debut our two new studios, and for the next phases of our building project,” said Kim Decker, Chief Executive Officer of the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA. “As our community grows, it’s important for us to grow along with it so we can continue to be a vital resource now and for generations to come.”

Other aspects of the Y’s building project include: a Wellness Center expansion; new outdoor campsite; adding a second-story viewing area and expanded pool deck on Pool 2, and a new lobby and expanded café space.
Work on the campsite has started, and construction on the Wellness Center is anticipated to start next month. Thanks to prior support, the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Y is on its way to raising the funds needed to finish all portions of the project. The Y is currently undergoing a capital fundraising campaign to raise an additional $2 million to bring the full vision to completion.

“This expansion will not only make our building bigger, but also will allow us to create more programs to serve every segment of our community from infants through active older adults,” Decker said. “With our community’s support, our Y will always be a place where minds and bodies grow stronger, friendships are made, self-esteem is built, and everyone feels welcome and engaged.”
