SECAUCUS, NJ — A bicycle was stolen Sunday, July 5 from a house on Centre Avenue, and Secaucus Police located and charged the Passaic man who they say stole it.
The bicycle was stored on the side of a house on the 100 block of Centre Avenue, said police. The homeowner had their gate closed.
Sometime between 1:40 and 2:50 p.m. Sunday, a man opened the side gate and took the bike off the property.
"He rode off leaving the gate open," said the homeowner, who said she captured the entire theft on her home's security cameras. "The bike has been parked there the past two years. My son uses it to get to work."
The woman called police, and Secaucus Police detectives canvassed the area where the suspect was last seen. Police located the bicycle in the area of 595 County Avenue.
The suspect, a 28-year-old Passaic man, was charged with Theft of Moveable Property [2C:20-3a], a disorderly persons offense. His name was not released by police. It was a disorderly persons offense due to the value of the bike.
"The community was very supportive and helpful," said the woman. "Two days later, we got a call from the police; they found him and returned the bike to us. We are grateful to the town and the SPD for all their help and support."
