Hudson County Is NJ's First Urban Area To Reach 70% Vaccinated

SECAUCUS, NJ — Interesting news: Hudson County is one of the most pro-vaccine counties in the state of New Jersey, and Secaucus is one of highest-vaccinated towns in the state.

Hudson County is the first urban county in New Jersey to exceed Gov. Phil Murphy's goal of reaching more than 70 percent of its population with at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Hudson County Executive Tom DeGise announced the news Monday morning.

Every single town in Hudson County now has more than 70 percent of its residents vaccinated, "with Secaucus leading the way at an impressive 90 percent first-dose vaccination rate," said county Executive DeGise.

There are 544,377 people over the age of 18 living in Hudson County, and 431,205 of them have received at least one dose of the COVID vaccine, as of July 12, according to state Dept. of Health data.

In June, Hudson County among 11 counties across the state that were selected for closer monitoring and increased resources from the state Department of Health to encourage vaccination. This included efforts like billboards and increased funding for free vaccine clinics.

That is because of how densely populated Hudson County and because for months, Hudson County remain in the coronavirus "red zone," meaning there was high transmission of coronavirus, higher than most other parts of the state.

Statewide, New Jersey now has about five million residents vaccinated, exceeding Gov. Murphy's goal of 4.7 million vaccinated.

The 12 towns in Hudson County are:

Bayonne, Jersey City, Hoboken, Weehawken, North Bergen, Edgewater, Guttenberg, Secaucus, Kearny, Union City, West New York and East Newark.
