Man Makes Up Robbery To Lure Cop Away From Pulling Him Over: PD

SECAUCUS, NJ — Well, that's one way to get out of a traffic ticket.

Secaucus Police say that while he was pulled over in a motor vehicle stop last week, a man called 911 and made up that he was witnessing an armed robbery at a nearby gas station, hoping to lure the police officer away from ticketing him.

The driver, Raymond Meyers, 58, of Jersey City, was charged with falsely reporting a crime, hindering arrest, obstruction of justice and false public alarm.

This happened shortly after 3 a.m. on Feb 18, say police: Secaucus Police pulled Meyers over in the area of County Avenue and Secaucus Road. At the same time, the police received a 911 call of an armed robbery at a gas station. The caller said he was witnessing the gunpoint robbery take place.

However, the robbery turned out to be unfounded. Instead it was the driver of the car who made the call "in an attempt to avoid receiving motor vehicle summonses, drawing the police from the stop to respond to the robbery call," said Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Miller.

It was "a diversion," said the police chief.

Meyers was served his complaint warrant along with eight motor vehicle summonses and was subsequently transported to the Hudson County Jail.
