SECAUCUS, NJ — The New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority (NJSEA) will meet Tuesday morning, Feb. 10, to make a decision on the proposed QuickChek, gas station and hotel a developer wants to open on Meadowlands Parkway.

Their second and final hearing on this will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the board meeting room at NJSEA headquarters, 1 DeKorte Park Plaza in Lyndhurst (in DeKorte Park). It's a public meeting and anyone can attend. The Patch will be there taking notes on what is said, and what the NJSEA decides.

Landowner Alexander Opper/The Opper Group wants to build a 122-room Extended Stay motel, QuickChek convenience store and gas station at 35 Meadowlands Parkway, the empty lot where the sunset mural currently is.

In order to do this, he needs to get at least eight variances approved by the NJSEA, which has control over that land.

The lot is zoned commercial, but it's not zoned to allow for a gas station there, likely due to flooding. 35 Meadowlands Parkway floods regularly in high tides from the Hackensack River. Fuel tanks to hold the gasoline would indeed go underground there if the NJSEA approves it, Mayor Gonnelli said last week. He supports the new businesses coming there.

The Opper Group was required by the state of New Jersey to fill the land, cap it and elevate the lot, which they spent the past five+ years doing and have now completed.

Once the NJSEA makes their decision, the Opper Group then needs to get the NJ Dept. of Transportation to agree to change that red light intersection, and add a center lane to go straight into the QuickChek/gas station.

If the DOT agrees, only then will the proposal go before the town of Secaucus. But Gonnelli and town administrator Gary Jeffas already said last week the town likes the idea, and is likely to approve it.

Let's see what Tuesday brings. Stay tuned.
