During the traffic stop, detectives noticed the “SOS” button inside the car was pulled from the ceiling, along with a trim piece in the rear of the vehicle.
"Both of these pieces are commonly removed by auto thieves to disable a vehicle’s GPS," said Secaucus Police.
Officers checked the car's VIN number, which appeared to be inconsistent with that installed by BMW. Detectives also inspected the VIN label on the driver’s side door, which had misspellings on it, giving the inference it was fraudulent.
Upon inspecting the VIN number on another part of the vehicle, it was discovered that the BMW had been reported stolen on September 23, 2022 in Morristown.
During a search of the car, a large quantity of evidence of bank fraud along with personal identifying information of various people was seized. Additionally, three forged Georgia Temporary Registrations were seized.
The car's driver, Verly Antenor, 21 of Roselle Park, was placed under arrest.
Secaucus police then went back to the Rodeway Inn and located the man and woman. They were both arrested for having outstanding warrants. During a consensual search of their hotel room, Garlick was found in possession of 45 wax folds of suspected heroin along with drug paraphernalia.
“I laud the efforts of the SPD’s Anti-Crime Unit,” Chief Dennis Miller said. “The Secaucus Police Department will continue to probe problematic areas for criminal activity and seek out the criminal element.
