Downtown Secaucus World Cup Event Likely Moving To Laurel Hill Park

A planned World Cup pep rally/fan festival may now move to Laurel Hill Park.

SECAUCUS, NJ — In December, it was announced that Secaucus was chosen by the Meadowlands Chamber of Commerce and Goya food company to be a "host town/flag city" for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

There was going to be a live broadcast of World Cup games on large-scale LED screens in the center of town on June 21, in the heart of Secaucus Plaza Center.

However, those plans have now changed, Mayor Mike Gonnelli revealed this week.

He said Police Chief Dennis Miller had concerns about a large-scale gathering in the center of Secaucus. Gonnelli said he could not elaborate, and Miller did not respond to questions.

Gonnelli said plans are currently being re-worked so the event may be held at Laurel Hill Park, which is a county-owned park. Hudson County would host the event, not the town of Secaucus.

A spokeswoman for the Meadowlands Chamber of Commerce said this week it is too premature to announce anything right now.

This is what was supposed to be held in Secaucus Plaza Center on June 21:

  • World Cup games broadcast on big LED screens
  • Food trucks, international cuisine and beverage vendors
  • A beer garden and VIP lounge
  • Live music, DJs and community performances
  • Kids’ zones with family-friendly activities
  • Shopping vendors, soccer gear and local crafts
  • Soccer-themed games and immersive fan experiences
  • Embassy and cultural activities
  • Flag installations, town-wide decorations and pep rallies
