1 Dead in Condo Fire in South Brunswick

Firefighters found the body of a man of about 60 inside the burned condo.

South Brunswick, NJ - One person is dead after a fire in a Kendall Park condo complex Friday afternoon, South Brunswick police confirmed to Patch. Firefighters found a man dead inside the condo unit after they put out the blaze.

The fire broke out at 27 Deerberry Lane in the Wynwood Condominium Complex at 2:45 p.m. Friday.

A Deerberry Lane resident called 911 reporting a smell of smoke; Kendall Park Fire Department arrived and began investigating the odor.

“On arrival we began to check the entire twelve units of the building. We quickly picked up high levels of carbon monoxide and began to search for the cause,” said Kendall Park Fire Chief Chris Perez. “I saw smoke coming from one of the doors and a blackened window. I knew we had a fire inside that unit.”

Firefighters made their way into the unit, and discovered the body of a man of about 60 inside. His identity has not been released. The Middlesex County Medical examiner has scheduled an autopsy for him for Saturday to determine an exact cause of death.

Firefighters had the blaze extinguished within minutes, but the damage was extensive.

The fire is under investigation by the South Brunswick Police, South Brunswick Fire Marshal, Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, and Middlesex County Fire Marshal. 

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
