New Jersey Repertory Theatre presents: 9 to 5 The Musical
9 to 5 The Musical is a musical based on the 1980 movie of the same name, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton. It centers on the downtrodden working lives of three women, Violet, Judy, and Doralee. They all work at Consolidated Industries, which is presided over by the sexist, lecherous, pompous, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot Franklin Hart. Set in the late 1970s, this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic.
Pushed to the boiling point, the three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with Franklin. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot! While Franklin remains "otherwise engaged," the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. Hey, a girl can scheme, can't she?....and the fun has just begun – Don’t miss this production!

This is the third production from NJRT’s Summer Mock program, and features an enormously talented cast. Summer Mock is a unique program that allows students ages 12-21 to participate in a mock version of a Summer Stock theatre program, while providing them with opportunities both On-Stage and behind the scenes. Created by Quentin Madia and Phyllis Kristjanson, Summer Mock is an intense 6 to 8-week program where students produce and perform three musicals. In its first Summer Mock Season, NJRT produced Spelling Bee, Little Women, and Guys and Dolls. The program worked as followed: If you were a principal character in one show, you then worked behind the scenes for another show, and vice versa.
For summer 2017, the program expanded to more of a student body. Older participants were able to participate in all three productions, Grease and 9 to 5 for performance, and helping on 13! The Musical. Younger participants worked on 13! for most of the six weeks, and were involved as much as possible on the other shows.
Summer Mock allowed students to pick and choose what areas of theatre they want to participate in. Whether it is stage management, assistant directing, any of the technical design aspects, or performance, students received a well-rounded experience of putting a show together. Additionally, some students filmed and edited trailers and promotional videos for the shows. Overall, Summer Mock provided a terrific learning experience for those with interest in creating professional quality and affordable theatre for their community.
