SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — Six seniors from South Brunswick High School were awarded scholarships from the South Brunswick Education Association (SBEA), the South Brunswick public schools teachers' union.

The union awarded more than $15,000 in total scholarship money to the Class of 2017. This year, the union was able to provide nine scholarships to graduating seniors. Six went to South Brunswick High students; the other three scholarships were given to the children of union members. This is the greatest number of scholarships ever provided in the SBEA history.

The biggest award is the Joyce Sherman Memorial Scholarship and that went to senior Nada Shalash. It is an overall award of $8,000 but payable as $2,000 per year over four years of college. Criteria for the scholarship includes being in the top 20 percent of the graduating class and providing evidence of leadership, service and financial need, as well as writing an essay “Who or what made your education in South Brunswick special?” The other awards are smaller ($750-$1,000).
