Special Olympics Students Run with Police Officers in South Brunswick

Special-needs students from 4 different South Brunswick schools took part in the Special Olympics torch run Friday, joined by local police.

South Brunswick, NJ - Special-needs students from four different South Brunswick schools took part in the Special Olympics torch run this Friday morning — and they were joined by some local police officers.

At 6 a.m., South Brunswick officers joined Middlesex County Correction Center officers and Middlesex County Sheriff Department officers to run the six-mile length of Rt. 130 for the Special Olympics.

Police then went to Crossroads Middle School, where they were met by the school’s Special Olympic students. Together, the students and offers ran on the track as hundreds of students cheered them on.

And did you know? Many of those students cheering have spent the past two months raising money for the Special Olympics.

The police officers then headed to Indian Fields Elementary School, where the entire fifth grade rooted them on. Officers finished up at 1 p.m. at South Brunswick High School, where they teamed up with the SBHS Special Olympic team and ran the track. The track was surrounded by other high school students cheering on the student runners.

The Special Olympics competition will be held this weekend at TCNJ.

There will be traffic delays Friday evening along Route 27 starting after 4 p.m. South Brunswick and Franklin Police Departments will have runners participating in the Special Olympic Torch Run. Drivers should try to use Route 1 as an alternate.
