SOUTH BRUNSWICK — The South Brunswick Township Water Department has issued a system-wide Boil Water Advisory following a water main break at 4300 Route 1 at the intersection of Dow Jones Road that caused a significant loss of pressure across the service area.

The advisory, effective immediately, will remain in place until water testing confirms the supply is safe, officials said.

A second main break on New Road/Freedom Trail has been repaired, and crews are continuing work on the primary break on Route 1, with officials anticipating significant progress Wednesday. Water pressure remains functional throughout the township.

If all repairs are completed Wednesday, testing will begin. Once samples are analyzed and approved by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, the advisory will be lifted.

Residents are advised not to drink tap water without boiling it first. All tap water should be brought to a rolling boil for one minute and allowed to cool before use. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, brushing teeth, washing fruits and vegetables, preparing food, juices or baby formula, making ice and washing dishes.

Officials also recommend discarding any ice, uncooked food or beverages made with tap water since the advisory was issued. Residents should avoid swallowing water while showering or bathing and should not rely on home filtering devices, which most do not remove microorganisms. Pets should be given boiled and cooled water, and only boiled water should be used to treat minor wounds.

For dishwashing, residents should use the hot wash and dry cycles on their dishwasher or rinse hand-washed dishes with a diluted bleach solution of one tablespoon per gallon of water.
