SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — The South Brunswick Police Department will hold its first annual Developmental Disabilities Support Day next month. The event will offer families, caregivers and residents with developmental disabilities a chance to connect with first responders in a low-pressure setting.
The free event is scheduled for Saturday, May 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the South Brunswick Senior Center, 540 Ridge Road, Monmouth Junction.
Attendees can register on-site for the Alliance for Individuals with Disabilities program, known as A.I.D., which helps first responders better assist people with disabilities during emergencies.
Free emergency identification cards will also be available — wallet-sized cards designed to help individuals communicate critical information to emergency personnel.
Police vehicles and first responder equipment will be on display at sensory-friendly stations, giving attendees a chance to explore the equipment in a calm environment to help reduce anxiety around emergency situations.
Safety presentations held each hour will cover how first responders handle emergencies involving people with developmental disabilities and offer guidance to caregivers on what information to share when calling 911.
Representatives from Special Olympics and other local support organizations will also be on hand to share community resources.
Pre-registration is recommended. Families, caregivers, educators and support professionals are encouraged to attend.
