Once officers arrived at the scene, police said the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames with the driver trapped inside.

The driver, later identified as Juan Camilo Chara Lucumi, 28, of Union County, was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Middlesex County Medical Examiner's Office.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Lucumi's vehicle was going east on Forsgate Drive "at an extremely high rate of speed," when, for reasons still under investigation, he lost control of the vehicle, police said.

The vehicle then struck the dam wall at the entrance to Thompson Park, became airborne and traveled over Beckelew Avenue before striking the bridge over the Manalapan Creek.

The vehicle then came to rest in the embankment of the creek, north of 300 Buckelew Avenue.

Investigators estimate that the vehicle traveled about 250 feet in the air before landing, police said.

The Fatal Crash Unit of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office assisted with the investigation.

Also assisting at the scene were the Monroe Township Police Department, the Jamesburg Fire Department, Monroe Township Fire District 1, Monroe Township Fire District 3, the Helmetta Fire Department, Monroe Township EMS and Middlesex County Hazmat.
