SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — South Brunswick police are warning drivers to avoid New Road between Route 1 and Route 27 due to a blocked roadway and multiple submerged vehicles as heavy rain moves through the area.
A flash flood warning remains in effect for South Brunswick and the surrounding region until 5:30 p.m. The National Weather Service in Mount Holly issued the warning for northern Mercer County, Middlesex County, Somerset County and southeastern Hunterdon County as thunderstorms brought heavy rain to the area.
"Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen. The expected rainfall rate is 2 to 3 inches in 1 hour. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly," the weather service said.
The warning covers flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses and other low-lying and drainage-prone areas.
Other locations that may experience flash flooding include New Brunswick, Perth Amboy, Somerville, Somerset, Edison, East Brunswick, Bridgewater, Sayreville, North Brunswick, Ewing and Carteret.
South Brunswick police are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel if possible and to never drive through flooded roadways.
